One report says that 21 percent of  women of childbearing age who were tested (hair sampling) have mercury levels that exceed the EPA's recommended limit.(Greenpeace) The JAMA’s (Journal Of the American Medical Association) report reveals that 1 in 12 American women (8 percent) of reproductive age have levels above what the Environmental Protection Agency deems safe. They also found that women who ate three or more servings of fish within a 30-day period had four times the level of mercury as women who ate no fish during that period

Once mercury falls into lakes, rivers and oceans, fish and other creatures convert it to methylmercury, a potent neurotoxin. 

By eating fish and shellfish, people are exposed to methylmercury, which is dangerous for women of childbearing age because the chemical can damage the brain and kidney of developing fetuses, research has shown.
 Currently, the Food and Drug Administration recommends pregnant women and those who could become pregnant avoid eating shark, swordfish, king mackerel, King fish and tile fish, all predatory fish known to contain elevated levels of methylmercury.

What does "treated with irradiation" mean, and is it safe?

Irradiation is used to kill bacteria and parasites that cause food poisoning. The process treats meat, spices, fruits, and vegetables with gamma rays from radioactive cobalt, X-rays, or beams of electrons to destroy microbes by breaking their chemical bonds. 

The FDA and USDA, which recently approved serving irradiated beef in schools, insist that the process is safe. Opponents worry that irradiation can trigger the production of free radicals and carcinogens (such as formaldehyde and peroxide) in some foods. "Irradiation offers some clear benefits," says Donald Louria, chairman of the Preventive Medicine Department at the New Jersey Medical School in Newark, "but widespread acceptance should be rejected, particularly in schools, until issues such as the potential to cause chromosomal damage are resolved." Two other problems: Irradiation does nothing to prevent the unsafe handling practices that cause food to become infected in the first place, and it also destroys nutrients, although the FDA maintains that the loss is insignificant. 

You can identify irradiated foods by labels stamped with the radura symbol—a broken circle with leaves (above). You need to be vigilant—the FDA is considering allowing food producers to label irradiated foods as "cold pasteurized." When at the market, shop organic if you prefer your food irradiation-free.
